Gilding is a decorative technique for applying a very thin coating of gold to solid surfaces such as metal (most common), wood, porcelain or stone. In addition, a solid gold piece would often be too soft or too heavy for practical use.

On interior ornamental features, gilding can be used to highlight and pick out details. This type of ornamentation is not exclusive to gold leaf, however. Elements can be gilded in different metals such as aluminum, palladium, copper, silver or a combination of metals to serve a range of cost and aesthetic objectives.

Gilding on glass can create beautiful and unique personalised pieces such as glass topped chess tables pictures and frames, jewellery boxes. In fact anything where depending on how the gilding wax is applied, it can add subtle elegance, an old-world flair, or as in the case of today’s restoration makeovers, a bold dramatic punch.
